Students to compete in Academic Bowl
After advancing through two phases of online competition, the O’Neill High School JROTC Academic Team will head to Catholic University in Washington DC to compete in the championship event of the US Army JROTC Academic Bowl.
The June 21-25 event is sponsored by the U.S. Army Cadet Command, JROTC Headquarters and is conducted by the College Options Foundation.
O’Neill’s JROTC team earned top scores out of the 1411 Army JROTC teams that competed from around the world. It’s one of only 32 teams in the nation to advance to final competition, which includes an all-expense paid trip to Washington DC. Four of the six O’Neill JROTC students who competed in the preliminary competition — Amaan Fruitwala, Isaac Walker, Jacob Woodruff, Charlie Reeves, Tyler Chapman and Asher Spain — will make up the local team.
During two fast-paced preliminary rounds, students were tested on knowledge of JROTC curriculum, English, math and science.
The winner of the Bowl will compete against the winners of the Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy JROTC Academic Bowls in the JROTC Joint Service Academic Bowl championship.
