About two weeks ago, Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus, currently deployed for the Navy Reserves, made a video plea for residents of the county to send their support in the form of supplies to some 200 Orange County residents currently deployed.
He and said the county’s Office of Veterans Affairs will send items that are collected. Almost right away, two local entities — Village Hall and Thayer Gate Deli — jumped on the bandwagon and said they’d serve as local collection points and then deliver donated items to the Veterans Affairs office in Goshen. Then, on Monday, a third location was announced, Town Hall.
“I saw this video and my heart went out to County Executive Neuhaus because I’ve been in that situation,” Town Councilman Tyrone King, retired from the US Army, said. He said he too would make trips with supplies to Goshen.
Needed are: baby wipes, eye drops, sunscreen, foot spray, deodorant, Q-tips, disposable razors, toothpaste, packets of Gatorade or other drink mixes, Bibles & Rosary beads, lip balm, individually packaged (non-chocolate) snack foods, playing cards, and travel size toiletries.
No end date was set for the collection drive. Thayer Gate Deli’s Joe Klimoski said he’s about ready to make his first drop-off of donations after receiving several items since he shared Neuhaus’s video.
