NEW WINDSOR – Assemblymember Chris Eachus has announced the successful hosting of his First Annual Veterans Awards Ceremony, in New Windsor, honoring three outstanding veterans from the community.

The ceremony took place on Sunday, Dec. 17, at the Orange County Veterans Center.

Eachus said: “Veterans of the U.S. military are prepared to give everything they have to protect us, including paying the ultimate sacrifice. Today, we offered a small token of appreciation to our local heroes at my first Veterans Award Ceremony.”

Acknowledging the immense sacrifices made by veterans, Eachus highlighted the need for ongoing support, saying, “The only way we can match the dedication and sacrifice made by these veterans is to provide them and their families with the health care, support, and benefits they have earned and deserve. I am proud to be fighting for them every day in the New York State Assembly.”

Eachus honored:

Sa’eed Mustafa, also known as Ty King, is a councilman in the Town of Highlands. “He demonstrated an extraordinary 30-year career in the US Army, rising through the ranks to retire as a Command Sergeant Major,” Eachus said. “His remarkable service included deployments to Iraq, where his unit received commendations such as the Army Safety Award and the Quartermaster Unit of the Station Award.” Since retirement, he has continued to advocate for soldiers and veterans, organizing Veterans Resiliency Award galas in the Hudson Valley.

John Flynn: An Iraq veteran, Flynn is currently serving as the Commander of American Legion Post 633 in Highland Falls. “He displayed exceptional dedication during the aftermath of a severe flood in July 2023,” Eachus said. “Leading a group of volunteers, Flynn worked tirelessly to provide aid, distribute supplies, and set up a comfort area for children affected by the disaster. His efforts in relief, restoration, and stability during this challenging time earned him well-deserved recognition.”

Louis O’Neill: A retired Marine Corps Major, O’Neill, of New Windsor,  is a decorated helicopter pilot with two tours in Vietnam. “He flew an astonishing 1,178 combat missions. His courage and dedication earned him 59 air medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple,” Eachus said. “Post-retirement, he continues to support fellow veterans through a support group and mentors those with traumatic stress, leaving an indelible mark on the veteran community.”

In his closing remarks, Assemblymember Eachus expressed gratitude to the Orange County Veterans Center for allowing him to use their space.
