The first ‘snow day giveback’ is March 16
Students in the Highland Falls-Fort Montgomery Central School District will enjoy a ‘snow day’ on Monday, March 16. Then, schools remain closed for students on Tuesday, March 17 for a teacher in-service day.
“As we look at the weather throughout the country and worldwide, the weather patterns this year have been atypical, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank Sheboy wrote in a letter to parents this week. “Here in the Mid-Hudson region we’ve enjoyed a very mild winter with little snowfall. This February was one of the warmest ever recorded. As you know, we have only closed school twice this winter due to inclement weather.”
Thus, because the school calendar included five days for possible snow or weather emergencies, there are days off that need to be ‘returned’ to students and staff.
“At the same time, we must be mindful that late winter or spring storms are not uncommon and some of these days may be needed,” the superintendent said.
Sheboy explained that there are several New York State regulations that must be followed when creating a school calendar — public schools cannot be in session on federal holidays, nor can they include student days in August or July. The last day of school is also determined by the Board of Regents and the state’s Education Department based on the Regents exams.
He reminded families to check the school district’s website (www.hffmcsd.org) for calendar updates.
