Youth ball festivities now on Saturday

If you ask Town of Highlands Recreation Director Aaron Falk, he’d probably tell you that he’s not a big Mother Nature fan right now.

The fickle spring weather — namely rain — has been Falk’s archenemy in recent weeks as he’s planned and then rescheduled two big events in the community.

The first was the annual Easter Egg Hunt at Roe Park, first set for April 13 and then rescheduled for April 20. In both cases, due to heavy rain and saturated fields, the event had to be cancelled.

Then, for April 27, he had the opening day of Little League and Ponytail League set, along with the annual youth t-ball, baseball and softball parade and team photos.

Again, there was heavy rain in the days leading up to April 27, and all events had to be cancelled.

The new date is this Saturday, May 4. The parade will line up in front of Sacred Heart Church at 11:15 a.m. and step off at 11:30 a.m. At 12:30 p.m., the opening day festivities at the Ed Lewis Little League Field at Roe Park will begin (player introductions, the National Anthem, the throwing out of the first pitch, etc.).

Then, starting at 1:15 p.m. team photos will begin, and three games will be played on the Little League field — the Ponytail League’s Fillies-Broncos at 1:30 p.m. followed by two Little League games, the Royals-Orioles at 3:30 p.m. and White Sox-Yankees at 5:30 p.m.

Falk said he regrets any inconvenience the changes have created for families, and asks all to keep their fingers crossed that this week-end’s weather is good!

(Youth baseball and softball players between the ages of 7 and 14 and their parents also may want to be aware of the annual Pitch, Hit & Run competition. It’s scheduled for Sunday, May 5 at 10 a.m., again at the Little League Field. Registration forms will be available at the opening day ceremony.)
