Bryan Heaton Schempf
April 6, 1947—October 14, 2023
Williamsburg, Virginia
Bryan Heaton Schempf, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, law partner, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on October 14, 2023 following a nine month battle with Glioblastoma, a rare form of brain cancer. He was born in Rochester, NY to Marjorie and William Schempf on April 6, 1947.
Bryan was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy and retired from active duty as Staff Judge Advocate of TRADOC (then at Ft Monroe) in the rank of Colonel. He entered private practice, first as an associate at Stein & Smith, then as a partner with JBW&K in Newport News, and finally as a partner in his own firm. He and Marilyn met in Germany where he was first stationed and she was working as a teacher for the DOD Dependents Schools System. He and Marilyn had a great life together and were inseparable soul-mates. With their two daughters Allison and Laura, they traveled around the US and Europe. Bryan was an avid sailor and reveled in being out on the water. It was in private law practice, however, that Bryan found his passion as an advocate. He worked tirelessly for his clients and regarded the practice of law as a secular calling.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; daughters Allison and Laura (son-in-law Marc); grandsons Marco and Theo; siblings Ruthanne (brother-in-law, Joel) and Kevin (sister-in-law Jo Ann) brothers-in-law Allen Vandel (Shirley) and Jerry Vandel and numerous nieces and nephews.
He also is survived by his law partner, Mike Ware, with whom he founded the York County law firm of Schempf & Ware, and by his long-time paralegals, Amy Reider, Pam Denney and Jessica Deach.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Williamsburg United Methodist Church, 500 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg, Virginia, October 28, 2023 at 2 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Bryan’s name to the charity of your choice.

Monica Sullivan
May 9, 1963—October 12, 2023
Fort Montgomery, NY
It is with great sadness that the family of Monica Mahan Sullivan announces her passing on October 12, 2023 in Cornwall, NY.
She was born to James B. Mahan and Alma Mahan at St. Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh, NY. She grew up with 3 older siblings James, Brian, and Mark Mahan in Cornwall. She attended the Cornwall School District and furthered her education by attending Orange County Community College and Mount St. Mary College. Afterwards, she was hired at the West Point Association of Graduates, where she enjoyed her job as an editorial assistant for the Assembly (now known as the West Point Magazine) and the other assignments she was chosen for by Colonel Herbert.
Upon becoming a mother, Monica dedicated all of her time to attending to her children’s various sports and extracurricular activities, school field trips, and one of her favorite activities, coming into the school to read aloud to the elementary school students with her own children in the audience. Her children and her also spent countless summer days at Long Pond creating memories, playing in the cool water, and bringing along lifelong friends to enjoy the days with them.
When traveling as a family to Cape Cod with her young children in tow, she always remarked on how she loved the feeling of the beach, the smell of the ocean, and just feeling blessed to spend that time with her kids.
As the holidays would grow closer each year, Monica enjoyed sprucing up the house, decorating for each occasion, and making sure that she set the environment just right so her children had lifelong memories for each of these special days.
In her moments of solitude, she enjoyed picking up a good book, which ranged from anything from a romance to the Kennedy Family, with whom she was fascinated and intrigued by throughout her life. She also enjoyed the company of her dogs, especially Brophy, Brittany, and Sawyer.
As her children grew older, she found work at Bear Mountain State Park and spoke often about how she enjoyed her co-workers; she would share all the outlandish stories of the patrons of whom she encountered throughout her time there and tales from when she used to work at Anthony Wayne.
Monica was predeceased by her parents and her brothers: James and Mark Mahan. She leaves behind her brother: Brian Mahan; her sisters-in-law: Jennifer Mahan and Sue Mahan; her son: Timothy Sullivan; her daughters: Jacqueline Ahle and Amanda Sullivan; her son-in-law: Robert Ahle; and a number of aunts, uncles, cousins, and nieces and nephews. Additionally, someone very special to Monica throughout her lifetime who was not only her cousin, but close friend, Valerie Rose, shared so many moments of bliss, laughter, and of course, some innocent troublemaking.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to The Hudson Valley SPCA, PO Box 356, Vails Gate, NY 12584.
