Educator with local ties is a new Harvard grad

Dr. Amanda Leigh Aiken has earned  her Doctor of Education Leadership from Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, receiving the degree during graduation ceremonies held on May 25. 

Dr. Aiken was also the recipient of the very prestigious Phyllis Strimling Award during graduation week activities, for her commitment to empowering women in educational leadership roles.

She is the granddaughter of the legendary late Snowdrop Smith and Buffalo Soldier US Army Retired Edward Smith, longtime residents of Highland Falls. 

Dr. Aiken is the daughter of Edweana and Eugene Aiken, Jr. of Hopewell Junction — Dr. Aiken’s mother, Edweana Smith Aiken, is a 1971 graduate of Highland Falls High School – the last class to graduate from that school.

Dr. Aiken is a lifelong member of the American Legion Auxiliary, O’Connor Doyle Unit 633, Highland Falls. As a child and young teen she marched in many of the 4th of July parades in Highland Falls, as part of the American Legion Auxiliary with her grandmother and other members of the unit, including Ms. Ann Molina.

Dr. Aiken earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Spelman College in Atlanta, Ga. and a Master of Arts degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. She is a former award-winning Principal and District Administrator in New Orleans.

Dr. Aiken is the owner of A. Leigh Solutions, an educational leadership development firm. Her impact on education and children has already been significant.

Dr. Aiken is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and The Links, Incorporated. Dr. Aiken is married to Marine Corps veteran Mr. Ismail El-Shaakir and they live in Montgomery, Alabama.
