Organization held in-person ceremony last week

Twenty four students were inducted into O’Neill High School’s National Honor Society on March 16; they were welcomed into the chapter by the 30 existing members of the group in a candlelight ceremony.

“From the beginning of their freshman year, students have so many choices to make,” O’Neill Principal Robin Haberman said as she welcomed the families of the students to the ceremony. “They challenged themselves academically and produced very good grades; they chose positions within their sports and clubs which made them stand out from the others; they chose to work with and help others in various ways; and they chose to be good citizens in the classroom and around the school. The recognition these inductees receive tonight is well-earned and well-deserved.”

NHS Co-president Samantha Reeves acted as mistress of ceremony.

The ceremony was made even more special by the singing of the National Anthem by inductee Evan Owens, and the Posting of the Colors and Pledge of Allegiance by members of the O’Neill High School JROTC. Club advisor Joanne Roffman presented the certificates as the new members were presented by Grace Suchanyc and Grace Nowicki.

Four NHS members also spoke about the Cardinal Principles of the National Honor Society. Arthur Armstrong spoke on scholarship (reminding the inductees they are expected to keep grades as good as “if not better than” the day they are inducted); Derek Black on leadership (“a complex trait,” he said); Madalyn Bruhl on service (“which is what makes the NHS so great”); and Delia McGowan on character (“the most difficult to pinpoint and define”).
