Congratulations to six JIO students

scholars

They’ve all earned National Merit recognition

James I. O’Neill High School has proudly announced that five of its students —  Arthur Armstrong, Sarah Benson, Caleb Hagemaster, Evan Maasik, and Evan Owens —  have been named as ‘Commended Students’ in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program; and, one — Colby Riley — is in contention for a National Merit scholarship. All six are seniors.

Semi-finalist

Colby Riley, of West Point, is one of approximately 16,000 students across the country who are now competing for some 7500 National Merit scholarships totalling nearly $30 million.  Semi-finalists now must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist category;  they’ll find out in February if they are part of that group. Then, come spring,  finalists compete for about 2500 scholarships worth $2500 each; there are 1000 corporate scholarships to be given; and colleges will offer about 4000 scholarships based on the National Merit program.

Commended Students

Arthur Armstrong (West Point), Sarah Benson (West Point), Caleb Hagemaster (West Point), Evan Maasik (Garrison), and Evan Owens (West Point) are in a group of about 34,000 commended students throughout the nation and are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended students, while they won’t continue in the 2022 competition for scholarship awards,  placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the competition by taking the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

“Congratulations, Arthur, Sarah, Caleb, Evan, and Evan,” Principal Robin Haberman said this week.
