William E. Smith passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday June 15, 2021 after a long illness. He was born in Oceanside, Long Island on March 1, 1948. He was 73 years old. Bill was the first child of William J. and Erna (Unset) Smith and grew up in Brooklyn and then Long Island before the family moved to Buchanan when he was in High School.
Bill was a graduate of Hendrick Hudson High School and received his bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering from SUNY Maritime. He was a licensed Professional Engineer. Following initial jobs in the Maritime Field he began a long career with Consolidated Edison spending the majority of that time at Indian Point as a Senior Watch Supervisor.
He was a member of Buchanan Engine Company #1, Garrison Volunteer Ambulance Corps and NYS Society of Professional Engineers. He was also a parishioner at Our Lady of Loretto and frequently attended mass at Graymoor. He was the proud owner of a 1987 Buick Grand National which he raced in many events. Following retirement, he enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include his loving wife, Patti McCormack Smith at home, his son Erik and his wife Christina, of Highland Falls, NY, his daughter Lauren Speidel and her husband, Eric, of Nanuet, NY; his brother Adam and his wife Cathy of Buchanan, NY and sister Margaret McManus of Hopewell Jct., NY; and his four grandchildren: Erin and Brendan Smith and Adam and Grace Speidel. Bill was predeceased by his parents, a brother Joseph, and brother-in-law Thomas McManus.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday June 19, at the Atonement Chapel at Graymoor.
