Packets for newcomers, signage in works
If your business, community organization, church, or other group has a brochure, a menu, a coupon, or anything else they would like to include in new ‘welcome packets’ being compiled by Mayor Joe D’Onofrio, just drop off those materials at Village Hall.
D’Onofrio said he is putting together about 20 packets to be handed out to new residents of the community.
“People who move here don’t always know what denominations the churches are or when their services are, or what day restaurants are closed, or what community groups they can join,” the mayor said this week. “Once these packets are compiled we can have real estate agents or landlords let them know they can come to Village Hall and get all of the information in one place.”
He said he would include historical information as well.
To participate, just drop off the materials at Village Hall. D’Onofrio said he has spoken with Highlands Chamber acting president Tom Ossa and has asked for his help in gathering the materials.
In another tourism-related matter, the mayor said he has requested a meeting with the state Department of Transportation to see about getting some signs on Rt. 9W — “one at the Stony Lonesome exit as you come south, and at the car wash exit as you come north” — that advertise local businesses.
“People passing by don’t know what we have to offer so they aren’t pulling off the highway,” he said. “These signs could change that.”
