“Magnificent art” at Holy Innocents
First there was a church lawn. Then there was the idea for a community garden. Then there was a fenced off area that contained the garden. Then there was a shed. And now, there is a sign designating the Community Garden at Holy Innocents Church.
And you can see it all by taking a simple walk down Main St.
This past Sunday the shed and the sign were blessed by Holy Innocents’ Rev. Judy Ferguson. She noted the love and attention that has been given to the small plot of land in recent years, and thanked God that it gave so many people such joy.
On hand for the dedication were representatives of the West Point Spouses Club, which donated funds that helped purchase the shed and some of its equipment; Olga Anderson, who helps manage the garden; Susan Salazar, who installed the solar panels which light the inside of the shed; and Sara Hannawalt, who not only painted a cheerful mural on the outside of the shed, but also just recently designed and painted the garden sign.
“Give us the wisdom to use the resources nature provides us with for generations to come,” Ferguson prayed before the sign was unveiled.
Hannawalt told those gathered that it was her privilege to add the artwork to the community garden.
“So many people spend time to make our community better,” she said, “and hopefully the color we’ve added will pull more people in and get them more excited about projects like this in our town.”
This past summer not only individuals tended to small gardens within the larger garden, but Scouts and others did as well. Both fruits and vegetables were grown. Anderson reminds all of those who are interested in joining the community garden project to follow it on Facebook. It’s page is called “The Community Garden at Holy Innocents”. Gardeners do not need to belong to the church to participate.
