By the spring of 2022 there should be a new golf clubhouse in place just on the outskirts of West Point.

With officials wielding shovels full of dirt, ground was broken last Friday morning. Garrison Commander Col. Evangeline Rosel, MWR officials, Golf Course Superintendent Steve Whipple, Army Corps of Engineers officers and representatives of ICCI, the contractor for the job, were all on hand on the beautiful morning for a brief ceremony.

The new clubhouse will be 14,000 square feet, and feature a banquet room for 150 patrons, exterior patio for 75 patrons, a combined kitchen, administrative offices, a pro-shop retail area and a 104 space parking lot.

It will overlook the 18th hole of the golf course.

The project was first discussed as far back as 2000, Whipple said, noting that the old clubhouse, which was torn down several years ago, when it was determined it couldn’t meet the public demand.

There were challenges along the bidding process, he added, but the project is now underway.

As golf carts drove by behind her, Rosel recited a bit of a poem about the project, noting “A new clubhouse will benefit the community and town, a place to enjoy and relax after a few rounds!”
