Methodist Church raising funds for school supplies

For the past twelve summers, the Hudson Highlands United Methodist Church has held a bake sale in front of the Highland Falls Library to raise funds for its ‘School Supplies’ program.

Since the summer of 2009 the church has provided local school children with the supplies they need for school. In 2019, for instance, 195 children received the hand-packed bags, made from the supply lists created by the Highland Falls-Fort Montgomery Central School District.

The bake sale was the main fundraiser for the program, raising $650 last year to help purchase the pens and pencils, notebooks, folders, markers, rulers and more. Each bag contains about $20 worth of school supplies.

But, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the church could not have the bake sale this year, and is now hoping the community will consider helping to fund the program via donations.

It’s estimated it will cost about $1600 to purchase all of the needed supplies this year.

Those groups or individuals interested in donating funds (actual supplies are not needed because the items are purchased specific to the school lists) or getting involved can call the church office at 446-9444 and leave a message. Donation checks can be made out to Hudson Highlands United Methodist Church (note School Supplies) and sent to PO Box 781, Fort Montgomery, NY 10928.

Families that need school supplies, and didn’t sign up, — call 446-9444 soon and leave a message with the child/children’s name, the grade they are going into at the Fort Montgomery Elementary, Highland Falls Intermediate or O’Neill High School, and a contact phone number and email address.
There is no date set yet for the distribution of supplies, but it will be soon, organizers say — definitely prior to the return to classes by students on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
