Highlands Board met May 11

Town Hall remains closed in Highland Falls, Supervisor Bob Livsey said, and meetings remain closed to the general public. That said, the business conducted in Town Hall is moving along as usual, members of the Town Board reported at a meeting on May 11, and special exceptions can be made for comment at board meetings.

At the meeting, Supervisor Bob Livsey and Councilmen Richard Parry, Richard Sullivan and Tyrone King met and spoke on several related, and new, topics.

Town Hall: Livsey said that employees remain on a staggered work schedule with their immediate coworkers, and that online payments for all programs, bills and fees is encouraged. The supervisor said that as they prepare to reopen the building to the public, they’ll be looking at policies on social distancing, additional disinfecting of the building, the use of hand sanitizer and even fever screenings for those entering the building. The town will also be converting doors to Town Hall offices to doors that open either fully or just the top half, to keep everyone other than those who work in the office from entering.

THPD: King reported that the town’s police department has had no trouble covering its shifts through this pandemic, and has taken part in quite a few birthday ‘drive-by’ celebrations and school teacher parades. He added that the THPD’s new car is soon to be delivered and put in service.

Thank you’s: Most of the board members took some time to dole out thanks. Specifically: Livsey to all of the volunteers who cleaned up local roadsides (Vision, Battle Site Association, Chamber and Rotary); Livsey and Parry to the highway and sanitation departments who are continuing to get daily work and projects done “in a timely manner”; and Livsey to Recreation Director Aaron Falk and Highlanders President Chris Byrnes for facilitating mask delivery for local children and seniors. King also took time to thank the community at large for their compliance in social distancing and mask-wearing guidelines.

Water & Sewer: Sullivan said the town’s annual water quality testing has been done and residents will soon receive a copy of the report, and noted that the recent state-mandated dechlorination project at the Sewer Plant is about to be certified by the state.

Upcoming meetings: The Town Board will not have a business meeting on May 25, in observance of Memorial Day. The next one is expected to be held on Monday, June 8.
