The good news first:

Despite an international pandemic, the Town of Highlands will hang it’s Military Tribute banners, as well as new First Responder banners, along Main St. in Highland Falls and Rt. 9W in Fort Montgomery this summer.

Thirty-three military banners were sold, and the purchasing of first responder banners will continue through May 31. Six of those have been sold so far. The proceeds from sales of both type of banners benefits organizations devoted to either veterans or first responder welfare. To purchase a first responder banner, visit www.highlandschamberofcommerce.com. They are $150 each.

And next, some possibly good, but maybe bad news:

ArtWalk 2020 may end up turning into ArtWalk 2021. That’s because, despite a nice level of donations toward the popular summer Main St. art display, safety has to come first, organizers Suzanne Brahm and Cindy Modlin said.

“Our intention is to have the ArtWalk,” Chamber President Jim Modlin said at the May 6 Zoom meeting. “Right now we are talking with the artists and working with Collaborative Creations to see if artists feel comfortable moving forward this summer.” Had the COVID-19 pandemic not happened, ArtWalk 2020 would have already opened. It is sponsored by the Chamber.

In one other matter affected by the global health crisis, the new tourism map and brochures planned for this summer has been delayed, since there are currently no tourists coming to this area. Those businesses which purchased ad space in the banner can either leave it be for the next printing, or contact Modlin for a refund.

With regard to businesses, Modlin gave a ‘shout out’ to all of the businesses which have been able to be open and serve the community, as well as those which had to shut their doors.

“We commend all of you who are working through this,” he said, while expressing hope that the community will support other businesses when they reopen.

“In spite of what we are going through, nationwide, much good is coming out of this community,” Modlin added.

The Chamber will next meet, again via Zoom, at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3. Visit the website for more information on how to become a Chamber member.
