Stephen J. Douglas

June 23, 1957 – April 15, 2020

Highland Mills

Stephen J. “Pug” Douglas passed away on Wednesday, April 15, 2020, at home in Highland Mills. He was 62 years old. Son of the late Robert and Florence Fay Douglas, Stephen was born June 23, 1957 in Cornwall.

Stephen was a water plant operator at the United States Military Academy in West Point. He was a former member of the Town of Highlands Ambulance Corps, in Highland Falls.

Survivors include his loving wife Nancy Winters Douglas; his children Stephen A. Douglas of Highland Mills and Charles E. Douglas (Dayna Navatta) of Chester; his siblings Robert Douglas of Washingtonville, Theresa Travis of Peekskill, Loretta Jones of Highland Falls, and Donna Douglas of Blooming Grove; and by several nieces and nephews.

Stephen was predeceased by his brother Donald Douglas.

Cremation took place at Cedar Hill Creamatory in Middle Hope. Arrangements by William F. Hogan Funeral Home, 135 Main St., Highland Falls, NY.

Donald R. Fowler

December 10, 1935 – April 12, 2020

Peekskill

Donald R. Fowler, a Corn-wall resident for 43 years, passed away on Sunday, April 12 at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh. He was 84.

The son of the late Charles B. Fowler and Mabel (Ackerman) Fowler, he was born on Dec. 10, 1935, in Peekskill. Donald attended Shrub Oak schools and Michigan Technology University and enjoyed careers as a telephone lineman and draftsman for a kitchen design company before working as a chemical technician for Union Carbide Corporation. He retired after 25 years and co-founded Akin-Fowler Photography Studio, with his wife Karen, specializing in animal photography.

Donald loved antiques and collecting old bottles, and in the 1970’s he opened an antique shop in Garrison, where he restored old furniture and fixed antique clocks. He also loved hiking and researching old maps of the Hudson Valley. He was always available to help with fix-it projects. He was a kind and loyal friend and will be missed by all.

Donald’s wife Karen V. Akin survives at home. He is also survived by a daughter Rowan Merante and her husband Dana Olsen; his sons Douglas, Nathan and his wife Michelle, and Seth and his wife Laurie; his step-children Todd and Troy Akin and Heather Hannawalt and her husband Philip. Also surviving are his cherished grandchildren: Clare Gallagher, Jessica, Kate, Jack and Caroline Fowler, Alyssa and Aidan Fowler and Jeremy Fowler; his faithful dog Charlie; and his longtime friend and former wife Linda Fowler.

He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Richard and Charles; and his grandson Max Gallagher.

Margaret Truncale (Quackenbush)

April 12, 1930 -April 14, 2020

New Windsor

Margaret “Peggy” Truncale passed away peacefully on April 14 in Newburgh.

She was born in Manhattan on April 12, 1930, to the late Eugene and Ruth (Coyle) Quigley. She married the late Peter R. Truncale on Feb. 12, 1950.

Peggy was blessed with three sons Michael (Susan) Truncale, Robert (Michelle) Truncale and Timothy (Lori) Quackenbush; and daughter Kerri Quackenbush Harbster; grandchildren Michael (Giovanna) Truncale, Jr., Peter (Dawn) Truncale, Leah (Kristie) Bowers, Lauren and Andrea Truncale, Victoria Quackenbush, and Jake Harbster. Peggy was the proud great grandmother of Sienna, Madison, Tyler and Brady Truncale. She is also survived by her sister, Jean Murray, and many nieces and nephews.

Peggy was predeceased by her sisters Anne Rappa and Patricia Lewis.

Peggy owned the Cup and Saucer in Cornwall; she was the Town of Cornwall school tax collector and census taker, as well as treasurer for the Mountainville Youth Club. Peggy and her late husband, Timothy A. Quackenbush, II, owned Peg & Tim’s Deli in Harriman.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, aunt and friend to many. Peggy had a special talent for whipping up a delicious last minute meal for her family with minimal resources, always being sure to complement it with a chocolate cream pie or dessert. She was a wonderful mom and grandmother, giving the best hugs, sharing the best stories and offering her unconditional love. She will be sadly missed by her family, friends and all whose lives she touched.

Donations in her memory may be made to the local Humane Society, ASPCA or a charity of your choice. Services will be private due to the current circumstances. A memorial celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Michael W. Murphy

August 4, 1954 -April 5, 2020

Middletown

Michael W. Murphy, 65 of Middletown, passed away Sunday, April 5, 2020.  

Michael was born August 4, 1954 to the late Michael W. Murphy and Clarabelle (McCagg) Murphy in Philmont, NY.

Although Michael was born with a disability (cerebral palsy) he didn’t let that stop him from living. He worked for many years at The News of the Highlands before retiring. He was an avid Yankees fan and also took great pride participating in the Special Olympics in Syracuse during his youth, winning gold, silver and bronze.

Michael is survived by nine siblings Melissa “Missy” Schermerhorn (Matthew), James Murphy (Tammy Knox) both of Stuyvesant, NY, Andrew Murphy of Kinderhook, NY, Floyd Murphy, Kimberly Hayes (Leo) both of Hudson, NY, Deborah Nostrand (Kenneth) of Taghkanic, NY, Jean Race (Wade), Patricia Race (William) both of Philmont, NY, and Harriet Leftwich (Michael) of Alabama. Michael is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins; and also survived by his in-laws, David and Lorna Johnston, of Middletown.

Michael was predeceased by his loving wife Sharon (Johnston) Murphy.

A special thank you to those who provided love and care for him through the years and all of those at Wallkill Living Center whom he came to know and love.
