Sister Helen Marie Cahill

December 5, 1927 – January 14, 2020

Highland Falls

Sister Helen Marie of the Mother of God, FMSC (Phyllis Mar-garet Cahill) entered into eternal life on Jan. 14.

She was born Dec. 5, 1927 at West Point to Martin and Margaret Cahill, and was predeceased by her brothers Joseph and Martin and her sister Catherine. Phyllis attended school in Highland Falls, and earned a B.A. in English from Ladycliff College, her M. A. in English from St. Bonaventure University, and a Ph.D. in English from Walden University. She entered the Franciscan Missionary Sisters on September 8, 1947, after working for two years in Washington D.C.

After profession she began her apostolate of teaching in: St. Anthony’s, Butler, St. Matthews in Hastings, Sacred Heart in Highland Falls (from the late 1950s to 1963), Holy Name of Mary in Croton, Immaculate Conception in Irvington, St. Joseph’s High School in New York City, Ladycliff Academy, Ladycliff College in Highland Falls, and Marymount Manhattan College in New York City. After 35 years of teaching she began her second career, being employed by the Archdiocese of New York in services to the Cardinal Cook Guild and the CYO office, followed by secretarial work in the Chancery office of the Brooklyn Diocese and the nursing department of St. Francis College. 

Sister had many talents. For many years she played the ukulele and she wrote 13 hymns, some of which have been published in music versions of missalettes. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles and football.

Services were held at Mt. St. Francis in Peekskill on January 16. She was buried at the Sisters’ cemetery at Mt. St. Francis.

Anthony P. Galu

November 20, 1947 – February 17, 2020

Highland Falls

Anthony P. Galu passed away on Monday, Feb. 17, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh. He was 72 years old. 

Son of the late Philip Galu and Mary Donnery Galu, he was born in Cornwall, on Nov. 20, 1947. Anthony proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1969. After his service he became a general contractor for his own company, Anthony P. Galu Contracting in Highland Falls.

Survivors include his loving wife, Doreen DeYoung Galu; his son, Anthony Galu, of Manhattan and daughter, Laura Galu, of Manhattan; his siblings – Philip Galu, Phyllis Diggle, Mary Gartner, Margie Servidio and Jane Reilly.

A memorial mass will be celebrated March 6, 2020 at 1 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 353 Main St, Highland Falls.
