Winter Track
At West Point’s Gillis Field House on Friday, Jan 24, the O’Neill track team performed well.
In boy’s highlights, it was a night of personal records. Harry Marson pr’d in the 1600m run, with a time of 4:35. Davis Yoshitani pr’d in the 1600m run with a time 4:48. Henry Heckert pr’d in the 600m run with a time of 1:36.8 Ian Burpeau pr’d in the 600m run with a time of 1:37. Evan Maasik pr’d in the long jump (19’1), 55m hurdles (9.32) and high jump (5’3″). Ricky Fregoso pr’d in the 300m dash with at time of 41.55
For the girls, Samantha Reeves had a time of 8.08 in 55m dash and jumped 4’6″ in high jump. Also in the 55m, Malia Wanamaker had a time of 8.24 and Kahiyrah Bodiford had a time of 8.29.
Several girls set personal records too: Ella Johns pr’d in the 600m run with a time of 1:58.76, Olivia Bergmann pr’d in the 600m with a time of 2:07, and Pekina Mata’utia pr’d in the shot put with a throw of 31’7.5″.
Ellie Lemler won the pole vault with a leap of 10 feet.
Then, on January 31, again at Gillis Field House, the team was back in action for the Division championships.
The Raider boys won the division for the second time in two years. Leading the way were:
Yoshitani took first place in the 1000m and second in the 1600m; Marson took first in the 1600m and second in the 1000m. The two teamed up with Heckert and Jeremy Stoll to win the 4x800m relay. The 4x400m team of Burpeu, Keegan Trubenbach, Caleb Rhodes and Fregoso were winners. The 4x200m relay team also won – Sam Benson, Asher Spain, Kyle Mayo and Vic Ferreira. Also performing well was Maasik in the high jump, long jump and hurdles.
The girls had a solid fourth place finish in the division.
Lemler set a pr of 11’3 in the pole vault, and is now a top 5 jumper in the state, coaches said. Sam Reeves won the division in the high jump (4’8″). The 4x200m team of Kiley Johnes, Wanamaker, Bodiford and Reeves won the division (with the lights going out on the final lap of the race!).
The Raiders are back in action Saturday (Feb. 8) at Gillis for the county championships.
Modified Boys’ Basketball
The Raiders began last week with a win against Tuxedo. Mario VanZetta led the way with a triple double which included 20 points, 10 assists, and 10 steals. Thomas McGuiness also had 20 points, with four three pointers. David Walsh played well with five assists.
On January 30, the team lost to West Point. Joey Hurtado had 13 points and Thomas McGuiness had 11 points and 6 rebounds.
Varsity Boys’ Basketball
The Raiders were on a two game winning streak as they entered a home league game against Liberty on Wednesday.
On February 3, the team beat Goshen at home in overtime, 71-67. Darius Boben had a triple-double, with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals. Hector Borgos had 23 points and 11 rebounds, and Antwon Lewis had 18 points and five assists. It was Borgos who sank a three-point shot to take the game into OT, where the Raiders outscored Goshen 9-5.
The team also won in overtime 70-67 against Tuckahoe on January 29. Boben had 21 points, Borgos had 23 and Lewis had 16 in that game.
On January 26, the boys lost to Marlboro, 77-67. Lewis had 24 points in the game, Boben had 22, Borgos had 10 and Josh Borowicz had six.
On January 24 they beat Chapel Field 84-48, and on January 14 they lost to Chester 62-55.
