Do we need a noise law?

When Fort Mongomery’s Deborah Kopald appears before the Town Board typically, she’s offering them her assistance on big issues like cell towers, street lights or, most recently, smart utility meters. But this past Monday, she was at the board meeting to ask the help of the board members — she thinks it might be time for a noise ordinance in Fort Montgomery.

“There is machinery operating 11 hours a day, every day of the week,” she said, noting that her home happens to be sandwiched in between construction going on below and above her neighborhood. She said it has disrupted her work-from-home schedule, and relaxation time.

I’d like to see heavy machinery limited to operating four hours a day, and a set end-of-day time,” she said, “and no holidays.”

She explained that she often hosts holiday gatherings at her home and she is fearful to do so this fall due to all the ongoing noise.

Kopald first asked if an emergency noise ordinance could be enacted, to end December 31 while the board considers a permanent law. It was indicated that wasn’t possible.

In ending her comment at the meeting, Kopald, in typical fashion, offered to help draft a law should the board want her to.
