John Catano, who led the O’Neill Raiders varsity football team to a 7-3 record last season and took them to the Section 9, Class C championship game, has resigned as the team’s head coach.
Catano took a coaching position at his alma mater, Hendrik Hudson High School in Montrose.
O’Neill Athletic Director Debbi Crowe confirmed this week that leaving the Raiders too will be assistant coaches John Bell and Sangro Severino, who came to O’Neill with Bell at the start of the 2017 season.
While it is not too long before the season starts, Crowe said she already has several “quality candidates” apply for the top job, and will be interviewing them this week. In the meantime, the Raiders are continuing summer conditioning workouts with assistant coaches Brian Larkin and Rob McIvor.
“I’m disappointed to lose Coaches Catano, Bell and Severino,” Crowe said, “but we are working on it, and I think we will be fine for the season ahead.”
The Raiders open their season on September 6 at Marlboro with a repeat of the championship game from last year.
