Main replacement, paving starting soon
“A new gas main down Main St., new gas laterals, sidewalk replacement and curb work, and the paving.”
That’s what will be happening on Main St. in Highland Falls, beginning this past Monday, and continuing for several months, Mayor Joe D’Onofrio said.
The gas work — being done by Central Hudson via contractor Precision Piping — is to replace the major gas main under Main St. and then lateral lines to businesses and homes from Cozzens Ave. to Thayer Gate. The gas line work was to take about 14 days, “barring any problems”,” D’Onofrio said.
Members of the Village Board met last week with representatives of Central Hudson and the village engineer to plan the logistics for the gas line work.
Once that is done, at the July 1 Village Board meeting, Kelleher Contracting from Pearl River was awarded the contract to do the sidewalk and curb work, after bidding $201,500. There were five bidders on the job, with the highest one coming in at $678,000.
The sidewalk work could take up to 60 days. As that work is being done, the village will be planting several new trees on Main St., within the sidewalks.
After all of that is done, the village will begin paving. D’Onofrio said they will use the county’s low bidder — a common action, “saving the taxpayers quite a bit of money”.
“I plan to have all of north Main St. done by fall,” the mayor said.
As well, nearly a dozen other village roads, or portions of roads, will be resurfaced as well. Gas line work is ongoing on several side streets.
The mayor asks residents and those traveling through Highland Falls to be patient.
“We know there will be a few parking and traffic irritations,” he said, “but when all is said and done, this is going to be very nice. We ask for people’s patience, and know that we plan to be liberal with parking rules this summer to assist the businesses and residents.”
