It’s for those up to age 18

In conjunction with the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley and the Highland Falls-Fort Montgomery Central School District, the Town of Highlands Recreation Department will not only again offer a free lunch program for all children up to age 18 this summer, but also add a free breakfast program.

Recreation Director Aaron Falk said this week that the free meals — a combination of shelf-stable food items and fresh fruits, vegetables and breads, will be served from Roe Park. Boxed breakfasts will be available from 8:30 to 9 a.m. and lunches from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Mondays through Fridays from June 24 to August 30.

Falk said he met with Food Bank of the Hudson Valley representatives last week. Both he and that group were pleased with how the program operated here last summer.

“We didn’t hit the high numbers that we had anticipated, but, we had enough participants that for a first year it was considered a success,” Falk said. Thus, the expansion of the program.

Most of those who got lunches last year were enrolled in the summer playground program, which runs for seven weeks during the school district’s summer vacation.
