Joe Gill will retire on March 29 after serving for many years as the vice president and general manager of the News of the Highlands — the company that publishes The News of the Highlands and its sister paper, The Cornwall Local.
Word of Mr. Gill’s retirement prompted the following statement from the corporation president, Simon Sidamon-Eristoff: “Although we are sad that Joe is leaving, we are extremely grateful for his 48 years of distinguished and faithful service to the company.”
Mr. Gill began his career with the corporation as a 12-year-old printer’s apprentice in Highland Falls. He became a full-time employee in 1971 after completing a tour of duty in the military. When the News of the Highlands Inc. bought The Cornwall Local, Mr. Gill moved to Cornwall and rose to his current position.
In 1986, he became a board member of the New York Press Association, which represents some 300 weekly newspapers throughout the state. Six years later, he was elected president and served as the head of the organization in 1992 and 1993.
On a local level, Mr. Gill was involved in several areas. He served on the Cornwall Library Board of Directors, and was also active with the Museum of the Hudson Highlands, the Cornwall Independence Day Committee, the Friends of the Cornwall Library and the Greater Cornwall Chamber of Commerce.
He is a former member and officer of the Highland Falls Fire Department.
Mr. Gill and his wife, Janet, live in Cornwall-on-Hudson. “I know you will join us,” the company president said, “in wishing Joe a long, happy, and healthy retirement.
