Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) has asked the Department of Defense (DoD) to halt its plan to permanently close the Keller Army Community Hospital’s unit dedicated to providing labor and delivery services. The Congressman stated his position in a letter to Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan.
The labor and delivery unit had been temporarily shuttered since last May, but the West Point community had hoped to reopen the unit last fall. Unless the DoD decides to change course, it will remain permanently closed.
“Listen, West Point is a beautiful place to be, but the folks who are stationed there don’t have a choice about where they live. Shutting this unit down – making folks drive the better part of an hour to deliver happy and healthy babies – is unnecessary and cruel to people who are already sacrificing so much in the service of our country. I urge Secretary Shanahan to knock it off with the penny-pinching and restore these essential services to West Point families,” said Rep. Maloney.
