No 2019 ArtWalk in Highland Falls

Plans are underway for 2020

It was noted at the Feb. 15 Highlands Chamber of Commerce meeting that there will not be an ArtWalk in Highland Falls in 2019.

However, the Chamber is committed to supporting the ArtWalk in 2020 and early planning is already underway for 2020, co-coordinator for ArtWalk Cindy Modlin said.

She and co-coordinator Barbara Charlie Murphy had tried to get early funding to be able to commission artists for works for 2019, but a $2000 grant they expected in October was not awarded until recently, delaying their ability to plan for 2019.

Fundraising is a key element of the event, Modlin said.

They are hoping, she added, they can keep the $2000 to use toward 2020 — it’s from Orange County and they’re enlisting the help of Orange County Legislator Laurie Tautel in looking to keep it. The Chamber also adopted a resolution at the meeting asking the county to allow them to keep it.

ArtWalk 2017 and 2018 were coordinated by Modlin, Murphy and several others, and an earlier effort took place in 2015. The large sculptures were placed in various locations from Memorial Park to Thayer Gate, and were popular with both local residents and tourists.
